Which gender is AMD more common in?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is indeed more common in women. This prevalence is largely attributed to several factors, including the general longevity of women compared to men. Since AMD generally occurs in older adults, the increased lifespan of women means they are more likely to develop this condition as they age.

Additionally, some studies suggest that hormonal differences, especially the effects of estrogen, may also play a role in the progression of AMD. Women typically have a higher lifetime risk for developing both wet and dry forms of AMD, particularly post-menopause when hormonal changes occur.
